Grayson stared at Chastity in silence for at least half a minute, if not longer, too stunned by her answer to be able to do or say anything else as yet.
She had walked to Flint House this evening?
Her home was at least a mile away from this one, some of it through narrow, dirty, and unlit streets. Was Chastity seriously telling him she had walked those streets alone, in the dark and the rain, all the way from Hall House?
Streets that were not just unlit, but frequented by gangs of vicious cutthroats, intent on robbery or worse.
The fact Chastity had arrived here at all, and apparently without coming to harm or suffering molestation, had to be purely accidental rather than due to any wisdom shown on her part.
Wisdom would have warned her not to attempt to walk here alone in the first place!
âAre you aware you could have been set upon by thieves and footpads?â
âI have my small dagger in my reticule,â she reminded.
âA small dagger which, even if you had managed to remove it from your reticule in time, once you had stuck it into the first attacker, you would not be able to withdraw again quickly enough to disable a second or third one.â
âYou are taking that possibility far too seriously when I am here and obviously unharmed.â
And in Graysonâs opinion, Chastity was not taking the situation seriously enough.
She was here and, as she said, unharmed, but the walk here unaccompanied could so easily have had a different outcome. Even the thought of Chastity lying in a gutter somewhere, her sightless eyes staring up at the sky, was enough to send a shiver of dread down his spine.
Graysonâs arms tightened about her when he rose to his feet and strode across the room with her in his arms. âOpen the door,â he bit out between clenched teeth.
She looked startled, but did as he instructed. âWhere are we going?â she demanded as he carried her out into the cavernous entrance hall.
âAre those wet too?â Grayson spoke to his butler as the other man stood waiting near the front door, Chastityâs coat and bonnet in his hands.
âThey are, Your Grace,â the older man confirmed, his voice edged with disapproval. âI would have attempted to dry them by the range in the kitchen, but was unsure how long the young lady would be staying.â
Grayson breathed noisily through his nose in an effort to stop himself from speaking and so releasing the full force of his verbal disapproval in regard to Chastityâs actions. Richardson did not deserve it, and Chastity had now begun to shiver in his arms.
âDry them now, please,â he instructed the butler. âAnd then have hot water for a bath brought to my bedchamber.â
âGraysonâ¦?â Chastity gasped when he held her tightly in his arms and began to ascend the wide staircase two steps at a time.
He did not answer her until he had reached the top of the stairs to then stride down the hallway to his bedchamber. âYou will catch your death of cold if you remain in those wet clothes any longer.
